Who makes the world go round?

Our world, your world, you make it go round.
Our world, your world, you make it go round.
Our world, your world, you make it go round.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, I hate to put a damper on your thoughts but I don’t think that love alone makes the world go round?

If you are reading this column, in all likelihood, you make the world go round because people who read newspapers, people who want to be informed and people who share and discuss what they read and learn, make the world go round.

If you read books, write books, buy books, sell books, you make the world go round because it is through books and through reading that we not only understand our world but we learn to value our world.

If you are informed, if you are in tune, if you are passionate about certain issues and take a stand on what you believe you make the world go round because people with conviction can accomplish great things.

If you eat right, drink lots of water, exercise, and sleep right you make the world go round because you will live longer and the longer you live the better this world will be because of you.

If you are a Unitarian, Lutheran, Catholic, Buddhist, Muslim or Quaker or belong to other religious groups, you help make the world go round because you believe in powers outside of yourself that bring goodness to the good of all people and these powers bring us hope.

If you respect others, believe in the dignity of all, share what you have, help others, believe in the power of relationships regardless of skin color, wealth, social status, or language, you make the world go round because relationships bind us together.

If you cherish learning, support education, applaud people who receive diplomas, continue to learn, respect research, you make the world go round because only through learning can we create a more perfect world.

If you count your blessings, look upon each day as a new day with unlimited opportunities, dismiss cynics and hold up positive thinkers, you make the world go round because you realize that our short time on earth is but a twinkle in the universe but it can also be as bright as the brightest star.

If you yearn to look on the other side of the hill, take the road not previously traveled, open unfamiliar doors, cruise down the river beyond what you can see, and fly over that distant mountain you make the world go round because you realize that adventure begets adventure and it is through adventure that we discover ourselves.

If you try a new recipe, listen to a new idea, craft a new craft, sing a new song, read a new book, hear a lecture, digest a sermon, pray a new prayer, dance a new dance, run a new race, you make the world go round because newness means you appreciate every waking minute of every day.

If you vote, support people who run for public office, write to them when you have a gripe, become informed on the issues, and remember that it still is possible for anyone to become a mayor, commissioner, legislator, senator or president, you make the world go round because you believe we all can make our dreams come true.

If you fish, hunt, trap, hike, bike, climb, walk, camp, kayak, canoe, look for wildflowers, birds plants and planets and genuinely cherish and nurture our environment you make the world go round because you realize this is the only world we have and we may not have another chance to heal it.

If you love someone and show it, care about your neighbors, forgive those who have wronged you, lift up the underprivileged, count your blessings, give what you can for the benefit of those who do not have similar benefits, and do whatever you can do to call attention to others in our community, state, nation and world who are hungry and thirsty and in need of shelter and medicine and love, you make the world go round because if you don’t help them who else will?

If you have a regard for our past by remembering the good and learning from our mistakes, pass along stories you cherish, identify your old photos with names and dates, study the past and remember those who help make you who you are, you make the world go round because as we grow older we become more of the past and it’s the past that gives us the foundation for tomorrow.

If you aren’t afraid of hard work, do your best at what you do, think of others first, ask questions when you need to, voice concern when appropriate, you help make the world go round because only through honest work can we make the world a better place.

If you have kids, cherish kids, love kids, teach kids, hug kids, and provide limits for kids, you make the world go round because our kids are not only our future but they also are our legacy to our past.

If you love peace in the world, pray for peace to prevail, applaud peaceful projects, sing, talk, march and dance for peace, you make the world go round because a world that is peaceful is a world ours was meant to be.

How can I possibly do all of these things? You don’t have to do all of these things. You and I just have to do a few. And when we do, we will have made a better place; we will have led the good life; and we will have made the world go round.
